U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed on Monday the U.S. continued commitment supporting Lebanon en route to a brighter future, affirming on the other hand the importance of Lebanon's full respect to international obligations.
Clinton's words came following a visit to Prime Minister Najib Mikati who is currently on a visit to New York to head the International Security Council, in Lebanon's capacity as the President of the Security Council this month.
"Prime Minister Najib Mijkati has informed me about the Lebanese government's unremitting commitment to the implementation of International Security resolutions," Clinton said, "this only ensures Lebanon's stability and unity."
The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour, the Lebanese Ambassador to the U.S. Antoine Shdid and Lebanon's representative at the United Nations Nawwaf Salam on the Lebanese side, as well as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Jeffery Feltman, Security Council Official Spokesman Mike Hummer and other senior U.S. officials.
"The Lebanese government's priority is to achieve stability in the country and to ward-off likely foreign repercussions," Mikati said during his meeting with Clinton.
He also reiterated Lebanon's commitment to international resolutions. "We cannot be selective in respecting international resolutions," Mikati said, requesting once again U.S. support to the Lebanese Army, especially in implementing resolution 1701.
Moreover, Mikati called for the return to the Arab peace initiative previously launched by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz and which had also gained the full support and approval of Beirut's 2002 summit.
On another level, Mikati held talks today with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who underlined the importance of sparing Lebanon regional ramifications.
Mikati also had an audience with the Arab League Secretary General, Nabil Al Arabi, who briefed him on the outcome of his most recent visit to Syria, as well as on the Arab League's initiative in this regard.
